For this EO member spotlight, we’re highlighting Dan Pahos—and congratulating him on 25 years in business! Keep reading to learn more about Dan and his business, Home Instead, and his experience in the Birmingham chapter of the Entrepreneur’s Organization.
Dan’s EO Membership Experience
Dan Pahos has been an EO member for 12 years. When he initially joined, his company, Home Instead, was quickly growing beyond his capabilities. He turned to EO to learn from experienced entrepreneurs who had dealt with similar issues.
According to Dan, Forum has had a huge impact on his personal leadership skills. He’s enjoyed the bonds made with fellow Birmingham business owners over both failures and successes, as well as the genuine friendships he’s made over the years. Being on the EO Birmingham board has also provided exciting opportunities for Dan, including some international opportunities!
The most important thing Dan feels he’s learned from being an EO member is leadership. EO’s leadership training showed him how to better lead, manage, handle conflict, create systems and processes, and more. All of these skills have helped him be a better leader in his business.
Dan’s best advice for new entrepreneurs is to know your own strengths and weaknesses. It’s important to be willing to share your challenges (and failures) with others who have been in the entrepreneurial trenches. He also says that the best entrepreneurs have a natural curiosity, a strong bias toward action, a strong tolerance for risk, and they’re resourceful and consistently persistent!
About Home Instead
Home Instead provides non-medical, in-home care services to the elderly and disabled. This allows individuals to age in peace, in the comfort of their own homes. Home Instead sends a certified nursing assistant to help the person with things like bathing, dressing, medication reminders, meal preparation, light housekeeping, as well as Alzheimer’s and dementia supervision. They provide these services based on the patient’s needs—whether they need help a couple days a week, or every day.
Dan moved to Birmingham from St. Paul in 1993 after meeting his wife, Andrea. His father began having strokes, and Dan and his siblings had to fly back to St. Paul to help out. Eventually Dan decided to help other families deal with the same issues he and his family dealt with, and purchased the first Alabama franchise of Home Instead Senior Care in 1997. They’ve been caring for senior adults ever since—and are now celebrating 25 years in business! No one plans on having a stroke, a heart attack, or developing something like Parkinson’s. Home Instead offers families a convenient way to deal with these kinds of crises, whether they’re long or short-term.
